Background of the Study

Cancer diagnosis and treatment often lead to significant psychological distress for patients. Anxiety is one of the most common psychological symptoms observed in cancer patients, exacerbated by the uncertainty regarding treatment outcomes, side effects, and the impact of the disease on their lives. Mindfulness-based interventions, which focus on promoting awareness and presence in the moment, have been shown to reduce anxiety in various patient populations, including cancer patients.

University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) in Cross River State is a prominent medical facility where oncology care is provided to a large number of cancer patients. The hospital employs nurses who are integral to the comprehensive care of cancer patients. Nurse-led mindfulness training programs could be an effective intervention to reduce anxiety and improve the emotional well-being of cancer patients. This study seeks to assess the impact of nurse-led mindfulness training on anxiety levels among cancer patients at UCTH.

Statement of the Problem

Anxiety is a prevalent and debilitating symptom in cancer patients, but its management remains underdeveloped in clinical practice. While pharmacological treatments exist, non-pharmacological interventions, such as mindfulness training, have shown promise in addressing anxiety in cancer patients. However, there is limited research on the impact of nurse-led mindfulness programs specifically in the context of UCTH. This study aims to explore whether such interventions can alleviate anxiety and improve patients’ overall well-being.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effect of nurse-led mindfulness training on anxiety levels in cancer patients at UCTH.
  2. To assess the feasibility and acceptability of mindfulness training as an intervention for cancer patients.
  3. To determine the impact of mindfulness training on patients' overall emotional and psychological health.

Research Questions

  1. How does nurse-led mindfulness training affect anxiety levels in cancer patients at UCTH?
  2. How do patients perceive the mindfulness training program in terms of effectiveness and acceptability?
  3. What are the psychological benefits of mindfulness training for cancer patients, beyond anxiety reduction?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurse-led mindfulness training significantly reduces anxiety levels in cancer patients at UCTH.
  2. Patients participating in mindfulness training report improved emotional and psychological well-being.
  3. The implementation of nurse-led mindfulness training is acceptable and feasible for cancer patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on cancer patients receiving treatment at UCTH, evaluating the effectiveness of mindfulness training in reducing anxiety. Limitations include potential patient attrition, self-reported anxiety measures, and variability in individual responses to mindfulness practices.

Definitions of Terms

  • Nurse-Led Mindfulness Training: A non-pharmacological intervention delivered by oncology nurses that involves teaching cancer patients mindfulness practices to improve their emotional well-being and reduce anxiety.
  • Anxiety: A psychological condition characterized by feelings of worry, nervousness, or unease, particularly about future events, which is common among cancer patients.
  • Mindfulness: A mental practice that focuses on being fully present and aware of the current moment, often used to reduce stress and improve psychological well-being.
